Narrow-Aisle Heavy Loads: Fork-Type AMR at a Transformer Plant

A large power transformer manufacturer replaced struggling manual handling with a compact fork-type AMR that shuttles 0.8–3 t transformer units through 1.6 m aisles — transfer time cut from 20 to 3 minutes per unit.

Project overview

The client is a large manufacturer of oil-immersed distribution transformers, covering R&D, assembly and finished-goods outbound. The workshop is compact with dense production lines, and transformer units weigh 0.8–3 t each, palletized on wooden pallets. Aisles between stations are only 1.6–2.2 m wide — traditional heavy internal-combustion counterbalance forklifts cannot turn or travel between the lines, while manual hydraulic pallet jacks make moving heavy transformers exhausting and inefficient. The plant urgently needed compact, short-distance handling equipment.

Equipment deployed: Fork-type AMR

What the customer faced

  • Site constraints — dense winding equipment and narrow station spacing; ordinary counterbalance forklifts have turning radii too large to enter line-side aisles for semi-finished and finished transformer handling.
  • Special loads — transformers have a concentrated, heavy center of gravity; whole-pallet transfer with manual pallet jacks is physically demanding and caps daily throughput, with real risk of knocking porcelain bushings and terminal blocks — damaging precision insulation parts.
  • Workshop environment — the enclosed power-equipment workshop cannot tolerate the exhaust and noise of internal-combustion forklifts; aging forklifts also carry high fuel and maintenance costs.

How MightyCargo answered

Compact body for narrow-aisle duty

A compact body with an extremely small turning radius travels easily through the workshop's 1.6 m aisles, reaching transformer assembly stations directly and completing a seamless line-off → palletizing → staging flow with no second handling.

Heavy-load handling matched to transformers

The mast load is matched to single-pallet transformer weight; forks pick the wooden pallets precisely and lift smoothly without sway, avoiding collisions with porcelain bushings and copper terminals on top of the units — sharply reducing finished-goods damage and scrap.

Green lithium power for the workshop

Fully electric with zero exhaust and low noise, the AMR fits the clean-production standards of power-equipment workshops. Compared with internal-combustion trucks, there are no engine oil or filter consumables, fewer wearing parts and simpler daily maintenance.

Measured impact

+220%

outbound throughput

Transfer time per transformer fell from 20 minutes (pallet jack) to 3 minutes; daily finished-goods outbound capacity rose 220%.

1 operator + 1 truck

instead of 4 handlers

The work of 4 manual handlers is now done by 1 operator with one MightyCargo forklift.

3.2% → <0.3%

precision-part damage

Transformer damage rate dropped from 3.2% to under 0.3%, saving over 10,000 RMB a year in rework and scrap.

−65%

annual maintenance cost

Lithium charging costs about one-fifth of diesel; annual maintenance spend fell 65%.

+80 m²

of new storage

Narrow aisles are now usable for continuous transfer; idle corner areas were converted into a temporary finished-goods storage zone.

“MightyCargo's fork-type AMR precisely solved our narrow-aisle heavy-load handling challenge. The compact body and stable rated load fit transformer transfer across the full production chain — it is the preferred equipment for short-distance heavy handling in compact electric-equipment plants.”
— Production Manager, power transformer manufacturer

The customer has since ordered 2 more units of the same model for new production line support.

Industry value

This deployment validates a blueprint that MightyCargo continues to replicate and refine across the industry.
